Our Story

How a local running group turned a love of the trails into an annual community celebration.

The Harrietville Half Marathon is a community-run event organised by passionate local runners. Every entry raises money for people and causes close to our hearts in the Harrietville valley

Born on the trails of Harrietville

The Harrietville Half Marathon grew out of a simple idea shared by a group of local runners — to create an event that celebrated the stunning alpine landscape on their doorstep, and gave back to the community that makes Harrietville such a special place.

Set along the scenic Great Valley Trail through Freeburgh, Smoko and the Ovens River valley, the sealed trail showcases some of the most beautiful running country in North East Victoria, finishing at the heart of the village at Tavare Park.

What started as a modest local event has grown year on year, welcoming runners from across Victoria and beyond — from seasoned half marathoners chasing podium places to families enjoying the 2km fun run together.

An alpine run like no other

The Great Valley Trail is the backbone of the event — a stunning shared path that winds through river flats and alpine forest beneath the shadow of Mt Feathertop, Victoria’s second highest peak.

With four distances from 2km to 21.1km, the event genuinely is for everyone. Whether you’re a competitive runner targeting a personal best or a parent running alongside your child in the fun run, there’s a place for you at the start line.

Harrietville Primary School

Local Youth Group

In 2026 we are also proud to support a local youth group, providing opportunities and activities for young people in the valley.

The event runs on the energy and goodwill of our volunteer crew. If you’d like to be part of the team on race day, we’d love to have you, just send us an email at harrietvillehalf@gmail.com.
